INL commute guide — Highway 20 park-and-rides and motor coach for Idaho Falls relocating families

Most Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site employees do not drive alone across the desert every day — they board INL motor coaches from designated park-and-ride lots, then ride U.S. Highway 20 west to their facility. INL’s Research and Education Campus (REC) sits in Idaho Falls itself, while the 890-square-mile desert Site is about 50 miles west of the city, so your actual commute depends first on which campus you report to.

I’m Jacob Marcovitz, a REALTOR® with Keller Williams Realty East Idaho. I help INL relocators pick towns and neighborhoods that match the Site commute, schools, and daily life — not a generic “Idaho is cheap” pitch. Call or text 208-821-6217 or start at eastidahojacob.com.

First question: REC in Idaho Falls or the desert Site?

INL is not one parking lot. Per INL’s facilities overview, research and related work happen at the Research and Education Campus (REC) in Idaho Falls and across the 890-square-mile INL Site approximately 50 miles west of the city.

That split matters for housing:

  • REC / Idaho Falls campus roles often look like a normal town commute — no Highway 20 desert run every day.
  • Site roles (Materials and Fuels Complex, Central Facilities Area, Advanced Test Reactor complex, and other desert facilities) usually mean either the INL motor coach from a park-and-ride or a long personal drive on U.S. Highway 20.

Before you buy a house, get your reporting location in writing from your hiring manager or onboarding packet. Neighborhood advice changes once you know which campus you serve.

For the broader move (housing, schools, timeline), use my Idaho National Laboratory Relocation Guide. This page zooms in on the commute itself.

How the INL motor coach system works (public facts)

INL runs a large employee bus / motor coach program for Site travel. In an October 14, 2024 INL feature story on its electric motor coach program, the lab stated:

  • A fleet of roughly 90 motor coaches
  • Transports more than 2,500 employees a day to desert Site work locations and home again
  • Operates 365 days a year
  • Accumulates 2.7 million miles annually
  • Improves safety by cutting car traffic and putting skilled drivers on winter desert roads

That same story describes a weekday example: boarding at an Idaho Falls park-and-ride at 6:02 a.m. for a roughly 50-minute ride to the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC). Another employee who had been driving estimated 80–85 miles round trip from home when they drove themselves to MFC.

Those numbers are INL’s published examples — not a guarantee for your route. Facility, lot, and schedule change what your day looks like.

What is not fully public: exact current route boards, seat rules, and some lot diagrams live on INL Bus Operations pages aimed at badge holders. New hires should use INL’s official Bus Operations hub at inl.gov/bus-operations (Daily Bus Report, load points, shuttle schedules, BEA bus passes) and follow the lab’s onboarding instructions. Do not rely on a realtor blog for tomorrow’s departure time.

Park-and-ride geography: where people actually board

INL’s public Bus Operations page lists park-and-ride / load-point diagrams that include (names as published; some lots are restricted):

Idaho Falls

  • Idaho Falls (17th Street)
  • Idaho Falls (Watersprings)
  • Idaho Falls (Yellowstone Lot)
  • Idaho Falls (Westside-Broadway)

Nearby Eastern Idaho towns

  • Rigby Park & Ride
  • Rigby (ITD) Park & Ride
  • Ucon Park & Ride
  • Shelley Park & Ride (SMC Only on the public list)
  • Rexburg Park & Ride
  • Roberts Park & Ride

Farther corridor towns (still on the public list)

  • Blackfoot Park & Ride / Blackfoot Bus Lot (some REC/SMC-only notes)
  • Pocatello (Hawthorne) and Pocatello (Pine Ridge Mall)
  • Osgood (SMC Only)
  • Mackay CFA/ATR and Mackay MFC load points

A U.S. Department of Energy Idaho Operations NEPA determination (CX posting DOE-ID-INL-18-006) describes leasing property at West Broadway and Bellin Road in Idaho Falls for the West Side Park and Ride employee parking used for bus transportation to and from the INL Site — which matches the Westside-Broadway lot families ask about when they want west-side access toward Highway 20.

Practical takeaway for house hunting: if you will ride the coach, map the drive from your driveway to your assigned lot, not only the desert miles. A home five minutes from your lot often beats a “closer to the desert” address that forces a crosstown hop every morning.

Highway 20 is the spine of the Site commute

U.S. Highway 20 is the main public corridor west from the Idaho Falls area toward the INL Site. Official site materials describe Highways 20 and 26 crossing the southern portion of the desert reservation; for most Idaho Falls–area employees, Highway 20 is the mental model for weather, winter gear, and “how long until I’m home.”

Winter is when the motor coach benefit shows up hardest: INL’s own feature story highlights professional drivers and fewer private cars on those roads. If you do drive personally, plan for wind, ice, and dark mornings — but get winter details from INL safety guidance and local conditions, not from a fixed minute count on a blog.

How I map neighborhoods to the commute

I do not invent drive-time tables. I ask three questions, then narrow towns:

  1. Where do you report? REC in Idaho Falls vs a named Site facility.
  2. Coach or car? If coach, which park-and-ride is realistic for your shift (confirm with INL).
  3. Schools and lifestyle? Ammon, Idaho Falls proper, Rigby, Iona, Ucon, and Shelley solve different family problems.

Rough patterns I see with relocators (qualitative — verify with your lot assignment):

  • West / southwest Idaho Falls — often convenient to west-side and Broadway-corridor lots and the Highway 20 departure.
  • Central Idaho Falls — strong amenities and Greenbelt living; lot choice depends on which Idaho Falls PnR you draw.
  • Ammon — east of Idaho Falls; popular for newer housing and family layout, but you are adding a hop across town to many Site park-and-rides. Plenty of INL families still choose Ammon when schools and house stock matter more than minimizing lot drive time.
  • Rigby / Ucon — have published Rigby and Ucon park-and-ride diagrams; worth a hard look if those lots match your facility.
  • Shelley — on the public list as Shelley Park & Ride (SMC Only); confirm eligibility before you buy around that assumption. New construction in places like The Parks still works for many buyers — just separate “nice community” from “my bus stops here.”

For the school-district layer, see Eastern Idaho School Districts Explained: D91, D93, Shelley 60 & Jefferson 251 — district boundaries are a separate decision from the coach lot.

Do not buy in week one because of the commute

Your first weeks often include badging, orientation, and learning which lot and route you actually use. Temporary housing near Idaho Falls (or near your likely park-and-ride) buys you time to ride the real commute once before you write an offer.

Remote buying is normal here — FaceTime walkthroughs, local inspections, and a clear start-date plan. See How to Buy a Home in Idaho Falls as an Out-of-State Relocator.

FAQ relocators ask me about the INL commute

Is the INL Site really ~50 miles from Idaho Falls?

INL’s public facilities overview places the 890-square-mile INL Site approximately 50 miles west of Idaho Falls, with the Research and Education Campus in the city. Exact miles to *your* building vary by facility.

Can anyone ride the INL motor coach?

Treat it as an employee transportation benefit. Public pages discuss BEA bus passes, load points, and employee reminders. New hires should follow INL onboarding / Bus Operations — I cannot assign you a seat from a real estate chat.

What are the Idaho Falls park-and-ride names?

As listed on INL’s Bus Operations page: 17th Street, Watersprings, Yellowstone Lot, and Westside-Broadway. Diagrams and rules change; check the live page.

Should I live in Ammon if I work on Site?

Often yes for schools and newer inventory — if you accept a longer drive to many west-side lots. If minimizing morning lot time is the top priority, we weight west Idaho Falls and towns with matching park-and-rides higher.

What if I work at REC instead of the Site?

Then you are shopping a city commute, and Highway 20 desert logistics matter less day to day. Still confirm building address; some people split time between campuses.

Where do I get live bus status?

Start at inl.gov/bus-operations for the Daily Bus Report, route/load-point materials, and dispatch contacts INL publishes there.
