Eastern Idaho school districts map for relocating families — D91 Idaho Falls, D93 Ammon, Shelley 60, Jefferson 251 Rigby

If you are relocating to Eastern Idaho — especially for Idaho National Laboratory — your kids will usually land in one of four public districts: Idaho Falls School District 91 (D91), Bonneville Joint School District 93 (D93), Shelley Joint School District 60, or Jefferson County Joint School District 251 (Rigby). City limits and school boundaries are not the same thing, so pick the district (and the feeder high school) before you fall in love with a house.

I am Jacob Marcovitz, a REALTOR® with Keller Williams Realty East Idaho. Most INL and out-of-state families I work with choose housing around schools and the Highway 20 commute first. This guide maps the four districts relocators ask about most. Enrollment figures below cite the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data for the 2024–25 school year unless I note a district’s own “at a glance” number.

Quick map: town → district

Central / west Idaho Falls

  • District you will usually hear: Idaho Falls School District 91 (D91)
  • Notes: Two traditional high schools: Idaho Falls High School and Skyline High School

Ammon, Iona, Ucon, and parts of east Idaho Falls

  • District you will usually hear: Bonneville Joint School District 93 (D93)
  • Notes: Idaho’s third-largest district by its own About page; comprehensive high schools include Bonneville, Hillcrest (Ammon), and Thunder Ridge

Shelley

  • District you will usually hear: Shelley Joint School District 60
  • Notes: Smaller district south of Idaho Falls; Shelley High School

Rigby and much of Jefferson County

  • District you will usually hear: Jefferson County Joint School District 251
  • Notes: Rigby High School is the main 9–12 campus families mean when they say “Rigby schools”

Always confirm the address with the district’s school locator or enrollment office. Boundaries change, open enrollment exists, and a listing city name is not a guarantee.

What is Idaho Falls School District 91 (D91)?

Idaho Falls School District 91 serves the heart of Idaho Falls. The district’s own schools page says it serves over 10,000 students across 19 schools, including 12 elementary schools, two middle schools, and five high-school-level options.

NCES reports 9,903 students for Idaho Falls District (State ID 091) in 2024–25, with offices at 690 John Adams Parkway, Idaho Falls, ID 83401.

Traditional high schools: Idaho Falls High School and Skyline High School. D91 also highlights Compass Academy (a project-based magnet high school) and a Career Technical Education (CTE) Center for hands-on pathways.

How to check your address: D91 points families to a School Finder / boundary map from its Enrollment and Registration page (ifschools.org). The district has also published boundary-adjustment information with an interactive locator for recent elementary changes.

What is Bonneville Joint School District 93 (D93)?

Bonneville Joint School District 93 (also styled Bonneville Joint School District No. 93) is the district most Ammon, Iona, and Ucon buyers are asking about. D93’s About page says it serves more than 13,000 students, covers parts of Bonneville and Bingham Counties, and includes portions of Idaho Falls plus the cities of Ammon, Iona, and Ucon. It describes itself as Idaho’s third-largest school district.

NCES reports 13,577 students for Bonneville Joint District (State ID 093) in 2024–25. District mailing address on NCES: 3497 North Ammon Road, Idaho Falls, ID 83401.

Comprehensive / named high schools on the D93 high schools list (as of 2026-09-04):

  • Bonneville High School — 3165 E Iona Rd, Idaho Falls
  • Hillcrest High School — 2801 E Sunnyside Rd, Ammon
  • Thunder Ridge High School — 4941 E First St, Idaho Falls
  • Plus specialized / alternative options listed by the district: Lincoln High School, Technical Careers High School, Bonneville Online High School, and Bonneville Online Academy

D93 also notes Willow Creek Elementary opening in Fall 2026 and an Ammon Honors Academy magnet pathway — useful context if you are buying new construction on the Ammon side.

Open enrollment: D93 publishes open-enrollment information on d93schools.org. Do not assume an out-of-boundary seat; check capacity and deadlines with the district.

What about Shelley Joint School District 60?

Shelley sits south of Idaho Falls along the US-91 corridor. Shelley Joint School District 60 is the public district families mean when they say they want Shelley schools (including buyers looking at new construction around The Parks).

The district’s homepage “at a glance” block lists 2,457 enrolled students. NCES reports 2,512 students for Shelley Joint District (State ID 060) in 2024–25, with offices at 545 Seminary Avenue, Shelley, ID 83274.

Shelley’s site also highlights Shelley High School (Russets) and a smaller-district feel. If Shelley is on your shortlist, pair school fit with your daily drive into Idaho Falls or toward the INL Highway 20 corridor — see my Idaho National Laboratory Relocation Guide.

What about Jefferson County Joint School District 251 (Rigby)?

North of Idaho Falls, Rigby is the satellite town many INL families consider for space and a smaller-town pace. The public district is Jefferson County Joint School District 251 (often shortened to Jefferson 251).

NCES reports 6,591 students district-wide for Jefferson County Joint District (State ID 251) in 2024–25, with offices at 3850 E 300 N, Rigby, ID 83442. Rigby High School (grades 9–12) is the campus most relocators mean; Idaho’s Report Card lists spring enrollment around 1,972 for that high school (school year reporting on idahoreportcard.org).

How do I know which school my address is zoned for?

  1. 1. Start with the city/town you are shopping, then the district table above.
  2. 2. Use the district’s official locator (D91 School Finder / boundary map; D93 enrollment tools on d93schools.org; Shelley and Jefferson 251 enrollment offices if no public map is obvious).
  3. 3. Call the district with the exact street address before you write an offer contingent only on “good schools.”
  4. 4. Ask about open enrollment / waivers if you love a house in one district but prefer a program in another — seats are not guaranteed.

City limits, postal city names on listings, and school boundaries do not always match. Ammon addresses are usually D93; many Idaho Falls addresses are D91; some Idaho Falls–labeled listings still feed D93. Verify the address.

D91 vs D93: which should INL families choose?

There is no single “best” answer — it depends on elementary feeder patterns, activities, and where you want to live day to day.

  • Choose D91 if you want to be in the core of Idaho Falls (Greenbelt, established neighborhoods, Skyline or Idaho Falls High rivalry culture, Compass / CTE options).
  • Choose D93 if you are targeting Ammon, Iona, Ucon, or east-side growth, and high schools like Hillcrest, Thunder Ridge, or Bonneville.
  • Choose Shelley 60 or Jefferson 251 when the town lifestyle (and price band) fits, and you accept a longer hop into Idaho Falls amenities.

FAQ for relocating families

Is Ammon in D91 or D93?

Ammon is in Bonneville Joint School District 93 (D93), not D91. Confirm the specific elementary and high school with D93’s tools for the exact address.

Is Iona or Ucon in D93?

Yes — D93’s About page lists the cities of Ammon, Iona, and Ucon, plus portions of Idaho Falls.

How big are these districts?

Using NCES 2024–25 membership: D93 about 13,577 students; D91 about 9,903; Jefferson 251 about 6,591; Shelley 60 about 2,512. District marketing pages may round or use a different “current” count (for example, Shelley’s site shows 2,457; D93 says 13,000+).

Do I have to live in the district to attend?

Idaho districts commonly offer open enrollment with capacity limits and deadlines. Treat in-boundary assignment as the default plan; treat open enrollment as a backup you verify in writing.

Should I buy before I know the school?

If schools are a top priority, no. Narrow the district and feeder high school first, then shop listings. I help INL and out-of-state buyers do that in one call: start date, kids’ grades, and must-have programs.
